The Book of Imaginary Beings by Jorge Luis Borges

--

This book described badly: a field guide to the beings humanity populates the shadows with.

That’s also a good description of it. This is a small book of well-written essays by Jorge Luis Borges.

He travelled the world and found stories of fantastic beasts that folks had good reason to believe.

He was sort of like a cross between the Brothers Grimm and Newt Scamander. These are real folk stories, but delivered in a tone that feels like Borges either encountered the “imaginary beings” himself, or believed that other people could.

A must read for anyone who wants to know about the weird monsters that actually inhabit our history. I loved it. I peruse it regularly.
