The Lost Future of Pepperharrow by Natasha Pulley

2 min readFeb 4, 2025

This book described badly: how to get your stubborn boyfriend to visit the doctor.

Natasha Pulley writes lovely books. Reliably heartbreaking. Balanced in their parts.

This book is like an intricate piece of clockwork, ticking towards doom. It’s a story of two complicated people trying to figure out how to live and be in love while also coping with what’s difficult about both of them and all their states of self.

It has many themes. Some serious ones, like accepting your partner’s love and care means change, and change is pain, but if it is love then change is also evolution. Others that are highly science fictional, like what is your responsibility when you have the technology to change the future?

It’s about Keita and Thaniel who navigate the weird intricacies of pursuing a romantic relationship with several obstacles. It takes place in the late 1800s, and they’re a mixed-race couple, so that’s a problem. They’re also trying to raise a precocious adopted orphan, so that’s also a problem. They’re also gay, so that’s another big problem. And also there’s the part where Keita has precognition.

I’m glad this lives in my head. Thanks, Natasha. I hope you keep writing good books.

Worth the headspace.
